Detoxing Glyphosate With The Help Of MSM
The truth is: glyphosate is nearly impossible to avoid and may contribute to your body’s toxic load. It builds up slowly over time, and the more you learn about it, the more you realize the need to include something in your well-being routine to help your body detoxify against the herbicide.
Today’s farming industry and global food supply are contaminated with glyphosate, herbicides, pesticides, and heavy metals. Yet, it remains a silent issue. According to the USDA, more than 225 different pesticides can be found on fruits, vegetables, and grains commonly consumed in the U.S. Glyphosate and other toxins can also be found in your water supply.
Glyphosate can cause many chronic health problems. It can increase the number of harmful microbes and bacterial strains in your body, impact your neurological and immune health, and cause intestinal permeability, also known as “leaky gut.” To better understand the negative impacts of glyphosate on our physiology, head to my other blog post here.
Avoiding glyphosate where possible and knowing that effective detoxification is possible can be empowering and is essential for maintaining good health. In my opinion, MSM is the secret weapon for detoxifying glyphosate. That’s why I’ve created my new holi (radiance) supplement, which combines the incredible benefits of MSM and ceramosides.
So, What Is MSM?
MSM stands for Methylsulfonylmethane, which is a naturally occurring sulfur compound found in plants, animals, and humans. MSM provides a high concentration of elemental sulfur, a key mineral with an array of health-promoting properties.
Sulfur plays an important role in the health of our hair, skin, nails, and connective tissues. It also boosts the body’s antioxidant mechanisms, supports detoxification pathways, and protects the immune response.
Sulfur And Detoxification
The liver is one of the body’s primary detoxification organs, and sulfur plays a critical role in supporting that function. Most of us don’t think of sulfur when we think of detoxing, but the truth is that a sulfur deficiency can have a very big impact on our body’s ability to detox harmful chemicals. This is due to the fact that the liver uses sulfur-containing enzymes to break down toxins and harmful substances, making them easier for the body to eliminate through the process of detoxification.
One of the primary sulfur-containing compounds the liver uses for detoxification is glutathione. Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant that helps neutralize free radicals and other harmful substances in the body. It is made up of three amino acids, including cysteine, which is a sulfur-containing amino acid. When the liver is exposed to toxins or harmful substances, it can deplete its storage of glutathione. This can make it more difficult for the liver to detoxify the body effectively, which can lead to a buildup of toxins and inflammation.
To that end, sulfur helps with the production of glutathione. It is a master detox molecule and an important antioxidant in the body to protect cells from damage. Sulfur detoxifies because it helps the body get rid of built-up toxins, which weakens the immune system and overloads the kidneys and liver. Sulfur also helps rejuvenate the body by excreting these toxins.
Meanwhile, the gut is another important part of the body's detoxification system. It plays a critical role in breaking down and eliminating toxins and harmful substances that enter the body through the diet. Sulfur-containing compounds can help support the health of the gut by promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. These bacteria can help break down and eliminate toxins and support overall immune function.
Sulfur is a powerful activator of our detox system and a defender against toxins like glyphosate. It’s most powerful in the context of glyphosate because of the way it improves the detox capacity of the body. Sulfur is also essential for:
- The production of vitamin B1 as it controls the digestion of fatty foods and the breakdown of carbohydrates linked to obesity.
- Working with vitamin B to facilitate the secretion of bile in the liver.
- Repairing damaged cells and promoting the growth of healthy new cells by helping them transport oxygen more effectively.
If you are getting enough sulfur from your diet, you may be eating food rich in garlic, onions, cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower, and eggs. However, sulfur supplements are available in myriad forms, including MSM (methylsulfonylmethane). This is where the power of MSM (and my new supplement holi (radiance)) comes in!
MSM And The 3-Stage Detoxification Process
The human body has three phases of detoxification and sulfur is considered "one of the few natural compounds that works in all three phases of detoxification. Sulfur is also the most potent phase-two detoxifier of any known natural compound."
For the body to detox effectively, the toxin in question needs to go through a number of stages of detoxification:
- Phase 1: toxins oxidized, reduced, or hydrolyzed into metabolites so that they can easily be removed by the body.
- Phase 2: the metabolites are broken into less toxic compounds for removal.
- Phase 3: removal of the toxins from the body.
One of the biggest problems with detoxification today is that phase one gets upregulated without phase two. This means that the toxic metabolites from phase one can build up as they’re broken down, toxifying the body further and making the symptoms worse since they aren’t broken down in phase 2, to be removed in phase 3. This happens a lot when people don’t have their detox pathways open or functioning properly. It can also arise when people focus on phase one detoxification supplements (for example, glutathione), but don’t target phase two.
This is why sulforaphane in MSM is so amazing for detoxification. It increases phase two reactions and prevents the buildup of toxins and their metabolites. It does this by Nrf2, a protein that is thought to be the ‘master switch.’ Sulforaphane activates the NrF2 pathway, which supports phase 1 liver detox and activates your DNA to produce more antioxidants, like glutathione. In fact, research shows sulforaphane has more potent effects on Nrf2 than milk thistle, curcumin, and resveratrol!
After the detoxification process and stages 1, 2, and 3 are complete, MSM also enhances the uptake of more nutrients and water to the body’s cells, which helps to promote the liver cleansing process. This results in the elimination of excess cellular fluids and waste products. MSM also enhances blood circulation by dilating the blood vessels. It’s an incredible detoxifying, refreshing, and nourishing organic compound.
Meanwhile, MSM is a safe detoxifier that can be used daily to support natural liver detox pathways and remove calcification in the tissues. MSM facilitates the detox process and the release of certain built-up minerals, such as calcium. This makes our body cells more permeable to release waste and toxins in our system.
Cellular permeability also encourages ushering in nutrients and water, which is beneficial for maintaining hydration levels in the body. So, detoxification also enhances the body’s antioxidant potential, protecting it from free radicals. All in, MSM is truly powerful!
Besides the detoxification support that MSM provides the body, it also helps with digestive recovery. This is very important when glyphosate contributes to leaky gut, leading to an inability to absorb essential nutrients. MSM can help rebuild the lining of the digestive tract, helping restore gut function and stopping particles from leaching out of the gut through small junction openings.
There is also some evidence to suggest that sulfur and glutathione work collaboratively with other minerals, fatty acids, and vitamins. In particular, they help our body to make prostaglandins, which reduce inflammation in the body.
In conclusion, MSM may be a really powerful tool in detoxing the body from glyphosate by binding to the herbicide, leveling up the detoxification of your body, and promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. By using MSM in combination with other detoxification strategies, you can help support your body’s natural detoxification systems and minimize exposure to harmful chemicals.
