Is Green Tea good for hair growth? The secret power of EGCG in holi (locks)
For anyone experiencing hair loss, hair thinning or balding, the active and nourishing ingredients in my holi (locks) treatment formulation will be a game-changer for you. Backed by advanced hair science and clinical studies, I've released the formulation so you can see the power of the active ingredients (click here to check it out).
Today, I'm not talking about these incredible active’s though, I'm talking to you about green tea. The topical application of green tea is amazing and this is why it was chosen as a key ingredient in my holi (locks)formulation. One day, this revolutionary compound will be understood for its power in the battle against hair loss and thinning but for now, we will keep it as an Agent secret!
So, green tea has been around for centuries. Did you know that Green Tea was originally brought to Japan by a Buddhist Monk named Eisai who referred to it as “precious medicine”? I love this fact! It's well known to have a lot of power inside the body with its antioxidant and anti-cancer properties. Most of the antioxidants in green tea come from compounds known as flavonols, particularly a type known as catechins and the way that green tea is made from fresh, dried tea leaves actually increases the antioxidant content further.
The most powerful catechin in green tea is called epigallocatechin gallate. You may see this as EGCG in literature (or for the rest of the article!). Despite the tons of other vital compounds found in green tea, it is the EGCG that is thought to be most powerful at playing a role in supporting hair loss.
Understanding EGCG & hair loss combo
Most common forms of balding are caused by dihydrotestosterone (better known as DHT), a hormone created by your body from testosterone. An enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase is involved too. It breaks down testosterone and converts it into the DHT, which drives the hair loss cycle further.
The cool thing is that scientists now think that EGCG from green tea works to fight against the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme that breaks down testosterone and produces DHT. They believe that it works by inhibiting the enzyme activity of 5AR, which then lowers the levels of DHT in the body, helping your hair follicles keep growing for longer - rather than falling.
And the science to back it up? It's slow, but it's growing.
Research has started to look into the scientific efficacy and effectiveness of herbal alternatives like green tea for androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness). The studies have shown that topical application of EGCG (found in green tea) can inhibit the effect of these hormones and slow down hair loss. A 2005 study gave 60 mice (experiencing hair loss) a topical solution for 6 months, and a third of these mice experienced 'significant hair regrowth'.
In another study in 2011, mice that received topical treatment of EGCG-rich green tea experienced significantly less hair loss than those that did not receive treatment too. The study also found that the death of hair follicles was reduced by topical application of green tea.
Other studies also have confirmed that topical application also prompts hair growth in hair follicles.
The bottom line? The topical application of EGCG is potentially very powerful for hair growth and regrowth. Drinking green tea may help with general health, but understanding the powerful and potent ability it can have to reduce your risk of hair loss and even promote hair regrowth is super misunderstood and overlooked at the moment.
Get on the EGCG trend before everyone else does. It's a superstar ingredient in holi (locks) that I feel confidently is what makes this treatment oil so revolutionary at stimulating regrowth and a healthy head of hair.
I *LOVE* hearing your hair regrowth stories. From postpartum, to hormone changes, to stress and genetic balding, it can help everyone. Let me know if you try it.
