Safe Sun Protection
It is so important to rethink our sunscreen habits and sun protection efforts given the current state of sunscreen regulation and the concerns raised by the FDA. Here are some key points to consider:
1. Lack of new active ingredients: The lack of approval of new active sunscreen ingredients by the FDA since 1999 is concerning! This means that there have been limited advancements in sunscreen technology to better protect our skin from UV radiation.
2. Regulatory issues: The FDA has identified only two ingredients, Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide, as generally recognized as safe and effective, out of the 16 ingredients reviewed. This raises concerns about the safety and effectiveness of other common sunscreen ingredients which is why we formulated non-nano zinc mineral spf 50 holi (soleil) and holi (sun).
3. Safety concerns: Some sunscreen ingredients have been deemed not generally recognized as safe and effective due to safety concerns. The FDA has identified 12 sunscreen ingredients as NOT meeting the GRASE standards due to insufficient data (GRASE stands for Generally Recognized as Safe and Effective) These ingredients include avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, oxybenzone, cinoxate, dioxybenzone, ensulizole, homosalate, meradimate, octinoxate, padimate O, and sulisobenzone. Despite this information, these ingredients are still permitted in formulations on the U.S. market until the FDA finalizes its proposal, but no date has been made official!
4. Ongoing regulatory process: The FDA's proposed updates on sunscreen regulations have been slow, and the finalization of these regulations is still pending. This delays the implementation of stricter safety standards for sunscreen products in the market. Recent studies have highlighted the concerns for the endocrine-disrupting effects of homosalate, avobenzone and oxybenzone.
Given these issues, it is important for consumers to be aware of the ingredients in their sunscreen products and choose products with ingredients that are considered safe and effective which is why we recommend our untinted mineral spf 50 holi (soleil) and our tinted mineral spf 50 holi (sun).
